The Westchester County Health Department issued a heat advisory that will last until Friday, Sept. 8, officials announced on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
The advisory follows forecasts of high heat and humidity that will make it feel over 95 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 7, with the sweltering temperatures continuing into Friday as well.
To help residents cool off during the heat wave, Glen Island Beach in New Rochelle will remain open on Wednesday until 6:30 p.m., with 6 p.m. as the last time visitors can enter, county officials said.
Officials also warned residents to take it easy.
"Pace yourself -- don’t overdo it in the heat,” County Executive George Latimer said, adding, "If you spend time outdoors, take breaks in an air-conditioned place and drink lots of water. And during a heat wave, remember to always check in on your elderly or ailing neighbors.”
According to Westchester Commissioner of Health Sherlita Amler, those most at risk from the heat wave include young people, seniors, people who are obese, and residents with high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, or lung conditions.
"Heat stroke and dehydration can take you by surprise," Amler said, continuing, "High humidity, chronic health conditions and some medications can also increase a person’s risk for heat stroke.”
According to county officials, signs of heat exhaustion include:
- Headaches;
- Nausea or vomiting;
- Dizziness and exhaustion;
- Cool, moist, flushed, or pale skin.
